When We First Got Satellite Television...

...I was a child and I remember assuming that the shows were actually recorded in some kind of space-ship.

Remember Manimal? Land of the Giants? Blue Night? The Lifestyle Channel? The Fun Factory? Probably not, unless you grew up in Dublin in the 1980s.

Pure and utter trash, all of it.

The Fun Factory was a long show which contained lots of other children's programmes, broadcast on Saturday mornings-- a bit like The Den, formerly Dempsey's Den (a popular Irish kids' show). Some of this wasn't so bad but it is with shame that I recall how one of my favourite cartoons was Beverley Hills Teens, a programme about super-affluent teenagers living a super-affluent lifestyle. As far as I can remember, this cartoon had no educational or moral or artistic value whatsoever. It was simply fantasy fodder, and in the crudest possible way.

Sometimes, as a corrective to nostalgia, it's good to reflect on these things.
