It's said that Ransom is based on Tolkien. I've read Out of the Silent planet twice and I really like it, I also think it has one of the best final lines ever. That Hideous Strength is also wonderful but perhaps too dark to be really enjoyable. I didn't like Perelandra much and found it padded even for a short book Maolsheachlannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09406722311993627528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091756463128804432.post-24509073058649502372021-01-02T07:06:04.355-08:002021-01-02T07:06:04.355-08:00It wasn't so much the Scottishness as the unco...It wasn't so much the Scottishness as the uncouthness.Maolsheachlannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09406722311993627528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091756463128804432.post-51707385091733350722021-01-02T04:19:42.719-08:002021-01-02T04:19:42.719-08:00PS

(apparently the actor's own singing too)Séamusnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091756463128804432.post-68580452841941635892021-01-02T04:12:58.440-08:002021-01-02T04:12:58.440-08:00Parallel to your rereading of Tolkien,I read some ...Parallel to your rereading of Tolkien,I read some of Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet at a school library at 13 and moved before getting arriving at Mars. It took until this year to seek out the Cosmic Trilogy again. And comparing with his friend's trilogy is hard not to do, especially wondering who may have influenced who. Silent Planet also introduced us to three distinct intelligent races M(elves, men and dwarves come to mind )and while CS was far from creating detailed language and script of the calibre of Tolkien, we do see mysterious language taking an important part, with mention made that language was Dr Ransom's métier, while one of Lewis' races was dedicated to arts and crafts, just as Tolkien's dwarf race. Numinor,of course,is alluded to in Hideous Strength, despite Silmarillion being unpublished at that stage. I'd imagine that Clive Staples' genius lies largely in producing a trilogy of three completely different stories, all unpredictable from the start.
Brilliant in different ways of course.
Séamusnoreply@blogger.com
