Reader, how many songs do you think have this title?
Well, I can't give you the answer to that, but I can tell you that there are nineteen songs so titled listed on Wikipedia. And presumably these are all unique songs, not cover versions. Who'd have thought it?
I was looking for the Wikipedia entry on the Stranglers song of that title, which contains the magnificent line: "When my eyelids close with the weight of a hundred years". It's almost as deliciously drowsy as "The Chorus of the Lotos Eaters" by Tennyson.
So there ARE a few good bits of poetry here and there in the pop world. I won't make an eejit of myself by listing bits of modernish songs that I like to think rank as poetry, you'd probably know too much about the real thing
ReplyDeleteI think there are lots of flashes of poetry in pop lyrics. The problem is they tend to be flashes, rather than sustained. You're most welcome to list your own favourites, that would be interesting.
