When I pray the second glorious mystery of the rosary, which is the Ascension, I often find myself thinking of the carving above the altar in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral.
Indeed, for some reason, the Pro-Cathedral seems to me the quintessence of Dublin-ness. Which is rather strange, since I haven't been in it all that often, though I was in it a few times as a small child.
"and though he never would say goodbye,
ReplyDeletewe could see it written in his eyes"
This year I was struck by how undramatic the scene seems. Despite the lavish images we see,no Transfiguration-like indescribable brightness or self-annihilation, according to Acts just a peaceful 'He was raised up' and 'disappeared in a cloud'.
Might be worth listening to An Beachlach Seo 'Ta Romham once more to consider the song's gentle philosophy of life.
That's true. I've always found the scene a bit strange, to be honest. Hard to get my head around.
DeleteI'm not familiar with that song!
"Indeed, for some reason, the Pro-Cathedral seems to me the quintessence of Dublin-ness."
ReplyDeleteStrange as it might sound, this comment absolutely *fascinates* me. I love that Pro-Cathedral , always make a point of visiting it—and I wonder what that says about me, if it is "the quintessence of Dublin-ness."
Further elaboration would be most appreciated as to why you say this!
It's hard to explain. I think it's the fact that it's full of nooks and crannies and that it's a strange combination of splendor and austerity. It's not colourful at all but it's still ornate.
