Two Phrases I Can't Stand

"Doing nothing is not an option."

"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

It seems to me that progressives have one imperative: change. Change for its own sake. The ideas that continuity and tradition are good in themselves seem alien to them.

And they never seem to entertain the idea that some "problems" might really be just permanent features of human nature and by-products of freedom.

What I really dislike about those two phrases is the air of finality with which they are pronounced. Yes, doing nothing is always an option, and sometimes it's the best option. And no, not being a part of the supposed solution (and how do you know it's the solution?) doesn't necessarily make you part of a problem. I would say it doesn't make you a part of the problem in most cases.

And also, you can turn the clock back.

  2. I know you're not a GAA man, but the leading example of this in pop Irish culture is ex-Cork goalkeeper and pundit Donal Og Cusack.

Change, change, change is all he ever comes out with. "Change or die", "Evolve or die" are two of his tedious mantras and he thinks he is so cool and "edgy" saying them.

The most absurd instance came when he was defending some proposed new tactic that was rubbished by other pundits, and he got so annoyed he claimed that "hurling's inability to evolve was due to the trauma of British occupation" or some such!!!!

    1. Oh goodness. I'm surprised he forgot to mention the oppression of the Catholic Church! Yeah, I've heard about this guy.

The whole POINT of the GAA was tradition and preservation! It seems to be super-woke now, I mean more so than even most Irish institutions...
