I think is the most common name for it, even in Ireland now, as it's come from America. But it seems to me nobody called them that in my childhood. I actually can't remember hearing any name of them. I remember hearing about bobble hats, but what do you call a bobble hat without a bobble?
I grew up in the US but never heard them called beanies until my thirties (I only ever heard 'beanie" in the phrase "propeller beanie"). They were mostly called ski caps. Old people said "stocking cap." Canadians called them touques.
Growing up in Appalachia, that was universally a toboggan (which I’ve read actually means “sled” in most other places in the US).
ReplyDeleteWow. I haven't heard that one. Very interesting! Thank you!
Deleteski cap
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting that one, either. I've got all different answers so far! I love it!
DeleteI have heard similar hats called beanies.
