A question prompted by my thousandth encounter with this sort of statement: "He loved good food and good wine..."
In this context - "good" translates as "expensive"... And wanting to other people to know he can afford it!
Doubtless you are right. I've never felt comfortable in a fancy restaurant. Luckily I've very rarely been in one...
