St. Praxedis

 

Today is the Feast of St. Praxedes, an early Roman martyr. I'd never heard of her before. The painting above is by Vermeer.

These early saints and martyrs are fascinating, partly because we know so little about them and yet their fame must have been considerable for generations after their death. How did the details fade from living memory?

I've always liked that one of the busiest train stations in London is called St. Pancras. It seems strangely appropriate, Perhaps because so much of national life is built on train stations, and the ancient Roman saints are a foundational stratum of the Christian society that still undergirds our world.
