When I was a schoolboy
Me and my brother
Would wait together for the bus to school each morning.
Now and again
an old man in a cloth cap and an overcoat
Would walk by the bus stop, and pause.
Then, with great formality,
He would shake the hand of everybody waiting there
As though he was a visiting head of state.
He was harmless, but he was cracked.
He didn't understand why people don't do things like that.
Why don't people do things like that?
